Edward Hopper, Nighthawks, 1942
Nighthawks are described as Hopper’s best work and are one of the most important paintings of American art. Hopper Nighthawks say that he inspired the restaurant at the intersection of two streets on New York’s Greenwich Avenue, but with a carefully formed composition and lack of narrative, it has a timeless quality that exceeds its local setting.
Generally, this picture is thought to mean the isolation brought about by wartime separations. When we look at the whole picture, we see this loneliness. The brightness of the restaurant and the darkness of the street emphasize the “loneliness” of this single shop, which is open late in the night. When we look at the restaurant, we see that the bartender has a conversation with the woman and the man, who is also facing us.

So did something hit your eyes?
The restaurant does not have a door. The painter does not want to let us in and emphasizes that we are alone. When we look at the picture for a long time, we can understand that it is a quiet and calm night. The lighting of the space and street of the light is a detail that fills the picture. The light also illuminates the shop window across the street. The writer, who is alone in the dark, shows us the safe.

This picture has no story, why is the cash register in the foreground, what are people talking, what is the man doing alone? The only answer we have is that the picture was made in 1942. II. While World War II continues with all its violence, those who are left behind are alienated and isolated.

Hopper has dealt with this loneliness in most of his works. Although the picture is thought to have a certain place, it is not clear where it actually is. Forms of American culture are brought together. There are very few obvious objects in the picture, these objects (cash register, coffee, etc.) belong to American culture. Also note that all the details that stand out are geometric forms.
Ordinary people, geometric shapes…
We think that the silence and loneliness that Hopper emphasizes in this picture is the return of war. But when we look into the picture, there are elements in every space such as salt shakers and napkins. So it would not be wrong to say a timeless picture. Loneliness and silence is a situation that we can always encounter in the crowd.
