Lumiere Brothers

The first thing that comes to our mind when it comes to the word cinema is the processing of images that consist of more than one frame and created according to a certain fiction. The story of the cinema actually starts with the Lumiere Brothers in the last quarter of the 19th century. Their full name is Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas and Louis Jean. They are among the first filmmakers. While the research for cinema continues in America and other European countries, this honor fell into the hands of two French brothers.

The Lumiere Brothers invented the Cinematographer, inspired by the Kinetoscope instrument that their father bought them during their Paris trip. In this way, the foundations of today’s cinema were laid. “This device they invented by Auguste and LouiseLumiere detects the movements that develop in front of the lens for a certain period of time with a series of successive photos, then displays them in motion in a living room on the screen.”

Soon after, the first film in the history of cinema, L’Arrivéed’untrain en gare de La Ciotat (Arrival of a Train to La Ciotat Station) was recorded by the Lumiere Brothers on December 28, 1895, in 55 seconds. This movie was also screened in a 120-seat hall in the Grand Cafe basement in Paris, which is also the first movie theater. Approximately 25 people watched this show. In this screening, nearly 10 films that did not exceed 3 minutes were shown. These films, which attracted great attention from the public, soon became famous. Later in the screenings in different places, the movie L’Arrivéed’untrain en gare de La Ciotat (The Arrival of a Train to La Ciotat Station) attracted great attention. In these shows, the audience is said to try to hide under the chairs when they see the train coming over them. There were some who escaped by fearing open-air cinema in Paris.

In addition, since the Lumiere Brothers were initially desperate for this job, they said they would continue this job for 6 months to 1 year. But after 2 years had passed, they had more than 1000 films. They had the opportunity to show many films in different places in different parts of Europe.

It did not take long for this to come to Istanbul with the invention of the cinema. Lumiere brothers came to Istanbul between 1896-1897. The films they shot were first shown to the people of the Palace and then to the public at the Sponeck Brewery in Beyoğlu. In 1908, he founded Cinema Pathe, called Permanent Cinema, in Istanbul as the representative of a Romanian Jewish company Sigmund Weinberg. Lumiere brothers later had the opportunity to shoot many shots in Istanbul. They shot films called Panorama of the Bosphorus Coasts, Turkish Artillery, Parade of the Turkish Infantry.
